The choice on offer in London often leaves many unsure what to do on a city break, but a new poll has revealed what Londoners would do.

The survey by the Londonpaper revealed that a third of Londoners would recommend a trip on the London Eye to someone who has never visited the capital.

Since the world's tallest observation wheel – towering at 135m high – first opened in 2000 it has become a favourite with Londoners and tourists alike and has become an icon of the city along with the likes of Tower Bridge, Big Ben and Piccadilly Circus.

Each year it attracts around 3.5 million people with its views up to 25 miles away.

Ken Livingstone, mayor of London, said earlier this year: "The Eye has become a memorable feature of London projecting a sense of modernity and excitement. An achievement of which Londoners can feel truly proud."

Londoners' advice after the Eye is mixed, reflecting the diverse number of attractions.

Ten per cent of Londonpaper readers suggested a concert or the theatre, and with the vast number of plays and musicals on offer in the capital's Theatre Land visitors are spoilt for choice.

A further nine per cent suggested shopping, while the museums, such as the Tate Modern, the British Museum and the National Gallery among many others, took eight per cent of the vote.

Eight per cent also recommended the Tower of London.

When it comes to shopping, many people first head to Oxford Street, with Selfridges and Debenhams attracting many along with some of the country's high street favourites. Kensington and Knightsbridge draw many shoppers with Harrods setting the standard. Heading from Sloane Square down King's Road in Chelsea is also a great way to shop and find somewhere for a bite to eat or a coffee with friends.

For bargains and a great experience, London's markets are the best bet. In north London, Camden market has maintained its reputation for cool clothes for decades, while Portobello Market in the west leading from Notting Hill Gate to Ladbroke Grove offers a great selection of antiques and objets d'art.

Others markets to look out for include Petticoat Lane, Spitalfields and Brick Lane – all in the east end of the capital.

While many say the best way to see London is from a double decker bus, seven per cent in the poll suggested walking as the best technique to get to know the city. Five per cent suggested an open top bus tour.

The remaining suggestions included eating and drinking - particularly advisable as the capital manages to cater to all budgets - a river boat cruise, which provides a unique perspective on the city, and general sightseeing.

Come the evening there is always much to do in London, from the bars of Soho and the West End to the many pubs dotted around the city, meaning whatever is on the agenda London ticks all the boxes.
